The St. Louis Blues over the last 3 days have put pen to paper regarding 2 of the 7 RFA players they currently need to sign this offseason. Forward prospect Mathias Laferriere and goaltending prospect Colten Ellis signed one-year two-way contracts for the next season as the Blues are opting to give the players a season to prove their worth.
Mathias Laferriere was a 6th-round draft pick from the 2018 NHL draft. The players in his draft class that the Blues selected were, Joel Hofer, Scott Perunovich, Hugh McGing, and Tyler Tucker. While playing in the AHL for the Springfield Thunderbirds for the last 3 seasons, Laferriere has posted 60 points in 174 games. He has been one of the most consistent players for the Thunderbirds and is used as a versatile forward in multiple situations.
Goaltender Colten Ellis has split his time between the AHL and the ECHL and has taken a year or two to develop and stabilize his play in the net. In his first season after turning pro, he performed well in the ECHL and mediocre in the AHL. Then the following season of terrible play in the ECHL started to make people wonder if he could be a 3rd round bust. Thankfully this past season he proved his worth in posting over .920 SV% and maintaining a great GAA of 2.89. He did split the season between the AHL and ECHL but that was only because the Blues at the time had Malcom Subban on contract in the AHL. Once he was traded the Blues had no trouble calling Ellis up to the AHL to finish out the season.
